Hetterly, 41, enjoyed Christmas Eve surrounded by family and friends, but was gone the following morning leaving a hole behind his family is still trying to fill.

"Jason accepted and understood my idiosyncrasies in a way others didn’t," his mother said. "Living nearby, I got to spend time with him doing mundane things like trips to the grocery store or playing a game of Skip-Bo at Panera.  "I loved talking with him about issues and stories in the news."

"He looked forward to family and community potlucks, and took great delight in planning, preparing, and presenting his most recent creation," his obituary states.

"He was a sweet and caring soul, growing more considerate and respectful of others as the years went by."

One friend described Hetterly as being "sweet, charismatic, artistic, creative, outgoing, outspoken, attention-grabbing and an all-around inspiration."

Hetterly was also a team member at the EmpowHer Foundation, an organization that seeks to "empower young girls (between the ages of 14 and 21) to realize their full potential through mentorship, guidance, and support."

"As a founding member, Jason played a pivotal role in shaping our organization," the Foundation posted on social media. "His creative genius designed our iconic logo, and his strategic mind helped guide our efforts.

"Jason's generosity knew no bounds; he selflessly donated his time and talents, DJing at every event and spreading joy to all who attended."

Hetterly leaves behind his bother Debbie, father John in Frederick, Maryland, brother Brandon in West Virginia, and grandparents.

He was predeceased by his fiancée, Lennaya Woodson in 2021.

In his final Facebook post, days before his death, Hetterly shared a poignant post with the caption "Merry Christmas to all the babies in Heaven."
